Informal Justice Court Project Registration

We are collaborating on an exciting restorative justice project with the Aardschap Foundation, Netherlands, aimed at using a multidisciplinary approach of art and law to tackle some of the challenges faced in the administration of criminal justice.

In 2018, we embarked on the Informal Justice Project in collaboration with a Dutch organisation called the Aardschap Foundation and a number of technical partners including the Lagos State University Theater Department and the African Artists' Foundation. The multi-disciplinary research project is aimed at expanding access to justice through the use of legal clinics, mock trials and art. The findings of the research project will be published and presented to audiences in Africa and Europe and will be the basis for determining whether it is a viable model for achieving restorative justice.

Justice too long delayed is justice denied. Dr Martin Luther King.

So far, the four stage project has included an art exhibition depicting the awaiting trial situation in the country, a 2 day brainstorming workshop with some of our partners, legal clinics at the Ikoyi correctional center, presentations at the World Justice Conference and we are now embarking on stage 2 of the project.

blog-contentThe Lagos State Attorney General, the Executive Secretary and two representatives of the LPILP partners, formed a panel discussion at the forum. The panel served to showcase the LPILP as an internationally acclaimed model which has within a short period, developed the culture of pro bono in Nigeria by leaps and bounds. The scheme was viewed as a unique format for clearinghouses that has the exciting potential for replication in other parts of the world.
